My Antonia is a lovely book filled with romance and suspense. This book is about Jim and his life growing up on the prairie in Nebraska. Although this sounds uneventful, mundane and humdrum, I must tell you that there is much more to it.
Antonia is a Bohemian girl who moves with her family to Nebraska. She is a very pretty, but driven girl. Jim and Antonia meet in a wagon on their way to Nebraska. Antonia's father asks Jim to teach Antonia English, since she spoke very little (they were very young at this point). And so their relationship begins.
When they are older they are still really good friends. Then Antonia's father dies, creating a dire situation for her family. After this event Antonia starts working in the fields with her older brother. She feels like it is her responsibility to help with the field work; since they lost her father. So then she becomes more and more like a man.
Later in the story Jim's family resolves to moving to town because his grandparents could not withstand the farm life much longer. In town Jim finds that it is much different from country life. Antonia then moves to town (with her brother's permission) to work for a family that lives next door to Jim and his family.
The rest of the book is about how fate separates them and reunites them later in the story. It is a very compelling plot and deserves the 8.9 out 10 score that it has gotten.
This book was very well thought out story and held my attention right up to the last word. The ending of this book is very unforeseen, and it makes you want to rip your hair out. I still can't believe how it all worked out. I would reccommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind being disappointed. However, if you do not like surprises then I think you'd better not. Just kidding, it is a great book.
