Christine: The Demonic Car
Well for starters I’m not much of a fan of reading, but Stephen King is the way to go. I’ve watched movies based on novels by King but reading the book is way better than the movies. This also goes for his novel “Christine”. This probably could have been just another horror book about a car gone mad; instead, it’s a story about someone with the obsession of his prized possession.
Christine starts off with two friends, Arnie Cunningham and his best friend Dennis Guidler. Arnie is the typical shy geek in high school; you know the ones that you actually see in your school. Dennis stands up for Arnie a number of times and is the narrator most of the novel because he is the more likeable person. Arnie actually symbolizes the victim in the story. Bullies and his mother are always attacking him. So one day when Arnie sees a car, a 1958 Plymouth Fury, that is in dire need to be restored. It just so happens that the car, Christine, has a history of murdering people, but Arnie doesn’t know that. Once Christine is restored to her natural beauty, Arnie falls in love with her. This is where there the plot starts to kick in and where it starts to put their friendship to the test.
The car starts to bring trouble to all the people around him, including Dennis. From this point on, Arnie has changed in a way that I would have not seen; he changes from an outcast character in the beginning of the story into a person that nobody likes anymore. After Arnie manages to land a girlfriend, Leigh, he becomes one of the most popular kids in school. In addition, someone else is in love with Arnie too, Christine. Christine is one of the most jealous people, or in this case car, you will ever come across. Once you cross her path you better be ready, because if you mess with her man or herself, you’re going to be another one of her victims. So now you can tell that Arnie does not own his most prized possession anymore, she owns him.
Furthermore, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for suspense and some horror. And if your looking for a book that has to deal with the strong bond of friendship it’s in here too. It also has a depressing ending to it that I find rather cool and interesting. Stephen King manages to make characters that everyone can relate to, which is why he is known to be one of the greatest authors of all time. So if you want a good book to read go pick up this book, hate or love King is a phenomenal writer and I’m sure you will enjoy the book.
