Justin Hardwick writes the following about The Rifle :
The Rifle
The rifle is a rather dark story by Gary Paulsen, which is unlike him. It is about a rifle’s journey through the hands of many people and how everywhere it goes, untimely deaths occur. It was built as an extremely accurate weapon which was unusual in the 18th century. It was also a beautiful weapon as well. In the end it kills British officers and is the reason why its maker is hanged. It is also the reason why its primary owner dies. And it is the reason a 14 year old boy dies. And it is the reason a woman is sent to a mental hospital. As well as it is the cause that a man dies of kidney failure through alcohol consumption. It obviously ruined and ended several lives. Not to mention those British officers who were killed by it. I enjoyed the book so much because it is unlike Paulsen to write such a book. It was also a good timeline. It showed how the smallest thing could effect so much. This book although dark is a great read. However if you don’t know much about guns it is boring in the first section. But after that anyone can enjoy it. It would say it is the best book I have ever read so far.
