Matisse Mozaffari writes the following about The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, No 1) :
Lyra Belaque is a girl that lives at Jordan College and likes to explore things with her friend Roger. When the “Gobblers” start stealing kids and taking them to the North, her friend Roger gets stolen. A woman comes to the college. Her name is Mrs. Coulter. She offers Lyra to go North with her as an assistant. Lyra realizes this is her chance to go North and find Roger. Lyra sets off on a great adventure, finding out things about her parents, meeting new friends and facing her greatest fears.

I liked this book because of the characters. One of my favorite characters was Iorek Byrnison, a Panterbjorn, or armored polar bear. Iorek cares for Lyra and protects her. My favorite part of this book is when Iorek and another bear have a fight. I loved that part because of the description. I felt like I was Lyra and facing everything she was.

I think everyone should read this book because of the moods it puts you in. There are two more books. The second one is called The Subtle Knife and the third is called The Amber Spyglass. You will have to read the next book because the end continues on. If you like adventurous books you will love this book.
