Delaney writes the following about Esperanza Rising :
Esperanza Rising is about a girl named Esperanza who is very rich and suddenly is forced to move from Mexico to California. This book takes place in the mid- 1930's. Esperanza's father is a cowboy. They live on 'El Rancho de las Rosas' in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Esperanza thinks her life is perfect, but suddenly, everything goes dowhill! Esperanza goes on a trip with other vaqueros (cowboys) and gets killed mending a fence! Esperanza's mami declines an offer of getting married, and then their house mysteriously gets set on fire! Esperanza and her mami, Miguel, Alfonso and Hortensia must move with their cousins and aunts in a Mexican Immigration Camp, where the are froced to live and harvest foods. I gave the ratings both a ten because the story is highly informative. Also the chapters have names of foods that they talk about in that chapter, such as 'Las Papas' (potatoes) or 'Las Uvas' (grapes). Will Esperanza get to go back to Mexico? I guess you're going to have to read the book to find out!
