I thought that HOOT was a well written book with many different problems. The biggest problem was when a Mother Paula's Pancake House was going to be built in an area that was already home to a group of Burrowing Owls. Burrowing Owls are a type of owl that lives underground. While reading this book, I felt bad for these owls because their homes were on the verge of being destroyed, and another thing is that these Burrowing Owls are on the edge of extinction. This was definatley the biggest conflict in HOOT.
The story is about how a new kid from Montana, Roy Eberhardt, moves to Coconut Cove, Florida. He is bullied by Dana Mattherson about everyday on the school bus. While on the school bus in the morning, he sees a kid running as fast as lightning. This kid turns out to later be Mullet Fingers, brother of Roy's new friend Beatrice Leep. Because of Mullet Fingers determination to save the owls, Roy, Beatrice, and Mullet Fingers team up to stop the Mother Paula's people of killing the owls because technically they cannot do construction because of legal purposes. All in all, I thought this book was well written, well thought out, and sends a great message, but, as you can see, I did not think the illustrations were that great.
