The Island by Gary Pulsen was a very unique book. Its calm in the way that not much 'action' happens, but its exciting in that the character is so layered, its fun to watch him grow and learn. In short, its about a boy who, after making an unsettling move to a new city and dealing with another of his fathers wild schemes, escapes to an uninhabited island to simply 'learn about things'. At first its a temporary thing, but when he decides to stay there indefinatly his parents think he's gone insane. The vast majority of this book is set on the island, in a peaceful and captivating exhistance that makes it impossible to put down. The end is quite shocking, and hard to understand at first, but very fullfilling.
