A Wizard of Earthsea remains one of my all time faves. While it seems at first that it is about good vs. evil and seems cliche, it is, however, not about those points. This story is about facing one's fears and finding a deeper understanding of one's self. It is more about the balance of a person than the redundant battle of good and evil. The novel chronicles classic hero-to-be events, but it is the Ged's growth that is more important than the journey itself.
A very important point to note is that, while the story is about a young boy that goes to a magic school, becomes a wizard, saves the world, etc, many of today's modern novels with these themes are in fact highly influenced by this older novel.
