Emily writes the following about The Tale of Despereaux :
The book, The Tale of Despereaux, is about a mouse named Despereaux, a rat named Roscuro and a peasant named Miggery Sow. The whole book takes place in a castle and a dungeon. The time period is the 1600's era. If you like fantasy and an unusual plot, then this book is for YOU! On an early morning in April, a mouse was born. His name was Despereaux Tilling. He had big ears, he LOVED to read, and he liked the sounds of music. As you can tell this book uses personification. One day, he hears the king, King Phillip, playing music for the princess, Princess Pea. So because of his love for music, he goes to the foot of the king. He at once fell in love, with the princess that was. It was against the mouse laws to speak and of reveal yourself to a human (which Despereaux did). Through a trial, he was sentenced to the dungeon. In the dungeon, was where the rats lived. They would partake in mice when they arrived. No mouse had ever returned, therefore, nobody expected Despereaux to return to the “light” again. But, a jailer promised to return him if Despereaux told him a story. The jailer fulfilled his promise, and Despereaux saw light again. Going back to when Despereaux was born, a rat named Roscuro was about to KILL the queen. It wasn’t purposeful, but he landed in her soup, and then she just… died. Because of her death, the king declared that soup be banded. His men went around and collected spoons, pots, pans, etc. so that NOBODY had soup ever again. It was then that they found out that a girl was sold to a man and forced to call him “Uncle”. They also discovered that she was sold for a red tablecloth, a hen and a handful of cigarettes. They at once took her to the castle. She was to serve as a servant. Her name was Miggery Sow. She longed to be a princess. She was quick to jump on assignments to Princess Pea’s room. Do to the rat wanting to be a rat, mean and cruel that was, Roscuro planned an evil attack on the princess. It would involve Miggery Sow. So one night, they took Pea to the dungeon. She was threatened with a butcher knife the whole way down the stairs into the deepest corner of the dungeon. The plan was to make Miggery Sow the princess and Princess Pea a peasant and a servant. Will Despereaux save his true love, or will Miggery Sow and Roscuro succeed in their evil plan? Read The Tale of Despereaux , by Kate DiCamillo to find out. I gave this book 4/5 stars. I rated this this way because it was well written, but not quite up my ally. People who like/love fantasy will enjoy this book.
