The main characters in this story are Alaric and Naia [In which they are actually the same person]. The Story takes place in a house passed down to family for many generations. They named the house Withern Rise. This book is about how after Alaric’s mother’s death, he finds the folly. The folly transports him to a different reality where he meets Naia, and discovers they are exactly the same. Except the gender, and Naia’s mom didn’t die. It’s about how there was a 50/50 chance that Alaric’s mother would survive. And when in Alaric’s life, she didn’t, it created another reality where she did. And there was also a 50/50 chance that Alaric’s mother would have a boy. And when she did, Naia was born and became a girl. They both have a version or copy of the folly. It continues to transport them to each other’s reality. In the end, on accident, they switch realities and the folly breaks so they can’t go back to the reality they belong in.
“He jumped back. It wasn’t his room. It was another just like it, in another cold, neglected, Withern Rise, in which there lived another motherless Alaric Underwood. He flung himself at the folly, gripped it with both hands and concentrated feverishly on his house, his reality. Then he was outside once more, trembling, not entirely from the cold this time. He clenched his fists, focused intently on his room, his own room and . . . he was there.”
I rated this story a 10 because it just drew me in. The way it left me wanting to know what happens next. I wouldn’t change anything about this book. It was perfect for me.
