Riku writes the following about The Midwife's Apprentice (Newbery Medal Book, 1996) :
The Midwife Apprentice is about a pitiful girl named Alyce who lived in a dirty old dung heap. Alyce was always teased by the villagers because she didn't have a stable home. One day a lady name Jane Sharp saw that Alyce was being picked on and decided to allow her to be her apprentice. However Jane Sharp the midwife always tried to hide her skills from Alyce, because she didn't want Alyce to be better than her. One day when the midwife was helping a rich patient, Alyce came to the rescue and help the bailiff's wife, who the midwife rejected to help, because of her poorness. From then on everyone was asking Alyce to assist them in labor instead of asking the midwife. However one time Alyce failed in helping Joan give birth and decided that she'll never be as good as the midwife when it comes to helping give birth. So Alyce runs away to the inn. When Alyce was working at the in she realized that she was a good midwife's apprentice who needed to learn how to not give up. She went back to the midwife and continued to bet he Midwife's apprentice. This book was a very slow but interesting book.
