In a town where families can only have two children, the Garner’s realize they have to hide their son Luke. Luke Garner, the youngest of three children, never had friends or even spoke to people outside his family. He has to stay hidden his whole life or else the Population Police, a group that takes away all shadow children (third children), will take him away from his family.
Then one day the government destroys his family’s backyard to make new homes. Luke looks through his window and sees a girl across the yard. He then takes a risk and walks across the yard to her house because he knows that they have two boys in the house. He discovers that she is also a shadow child, and she has a plan to ruin the government to end the Population Police and let all the shadow children live freely. Will Luke be part of it?
Margaret Peterson Haddix has been known for writing about the shadow children series. This novel is one of my favorite fiction books because it built suspense and kept me guessing.
