Katrina V writes the following about A Corner of the Universe :
Everyone has their own corner of the universe, the one place where they feel most comfortable. That’s what this book teaches you. I believe that is true. I recommend this book, A Corner of the Universe, written by Ann M. Martin. The plot is realistic, the characters are realistic and the author’s writing style makes the story convincing and makes it come alive. One reason I liked this book, A Corner of the Universe because the plot is very real. If this book wasn’t so realistic, it wouldn’t make sense and I wouldn’t like it. For example, a character in the book, Uncle Adam (uncle of 11 year old Hattie) has problems because of his mental disability and I would be able to tell if everything was just made up without any research being done. Quote: “We are getting closer to the top of the Ferris wheel for the third time, when I hear a screech of metal and we grind to a halt, our seats rocking. ‘What’s wrong?’ I ask Leila. ‘It must be stuck. That happens sometimes. My dad always fixes it.’ I glance at Adam. ‘We’re lucky!’ Leila goes on. ‘We’re stuck at the very top. It’s the best place to be stuck. You can look at the view all you want.’ ‘I think I see Grant Av-‘ ‘Oh, ho, ho, ho!’ ‘Adam?’ I say because this is not a happy shout.” – Page 130 The characters in this book are believable. The characters act the way they should. They are understandable and realistic. They don’t do things completely out of character. Hattie is spontaneous; she does things on the moment. She would not hesitate. Quote: “I do not know whether Nana told the that I want to say something about Adam. I am prepared to up on the pew and just start talking, if necessary.” – Page 176 The author’s writing style is unique. Ann M. Martin (the author) tells the story through the perspective of a young girl. The way she tells it is very different from other authors. A thought wouldn’t sound like this: “I feel like I don’t belong here.” It would sound like this: “’People walk down our street and drive down it and ride their bicycles down it and all of them, even the ones I know, could be from another planet. And I’m just a visiting alien.’” – Page 55 Your corner of the universe is your place where you are safe. It’s not a physical place, it’s state of mind and everyone has one, whether they know it or not. This is a really good book and you should find it and read it. Then, maybe you can discover your corner of the universe and lift the corners.
