lisa swirl writes the following about A Child Called 'It' :
The story A child called it is about one childs courage to survive the brutal attacks of his mother. David is beaten and hit by his mother every single day. He is treated like a slave and is never fed unless his mother decides to give him his brothers leftovers. He even gets stabbed because he doesnt finish doing the dishes on time. He is forced to drink his own pee. As a punishment his mother makes him lay in the tub naked with freezing water and doesnt let him pick up his head out of the water the whole time. She leaves him in there for hours and hours until she feels like letting him out. She makes him wear the same clothes everyday so that he can be laughed at by all the kids in his class. David even has to steal food out of his classmates lunchboxes. But when his mother finds out, she beats him until he can not move and is almost bleeding to death. He says " My life is like a living hell"
