HOLES

Louis Sachar explains how Stanley goes to Camp Green Lake. She explains all the characters that are there. The name of the book is Holes because they dig holes out in the hot desert. I think it is a good book because it teaches boys that if they do something bad and get caught they have to dig holes 5 feet deep and 5 feet across. The writer made a character that is kind of mean. His name is Mr. Sir. He drives the water truck to group A.B.C.D.and E. In the story for a couple days he dumps Stanley?s water onto the dry hot dirt. If you like to read about people digging holes and running away in the hot, wasteland, desert, than this book is for you.
The plot of the story is what happens in the story. This is what happened at the beginning of the story. Stanley was walking home and was under the hiway when Clyde Livingston?s shoes fell from the top of the bridge. His dad was trying to build a machine that recycled shoes. So he thought he could bring it home to his dad. On the way home he gets arrested because the shoes were stolen. In the middle Louis Sachar talks about how hard it is out in the desert digging holes and what happens out in the desert. At the end Zero does something bad that he ran away. A couple days go by while Zero is out with no water. Stanley runs away also and you will have to read the book yourself to find out what happens to Zero, Stanley and the other characters.
The characters of the book are mostly boys. Some of the characters do weird things during the book. Zero hits Mr. Pendanski with a shovel. The author makes it sound a little gross when she says, ?The sploosh makes him throw-up everything in his stomach.? Another weird thing that happens is Stanley moves while there is a yellow spotted lizard on him. {The yellow spotted lizard had red eyes, black teeth, and a white toung.} Even though he knows if it bites him he?ll be dead and nothing could help him. Some of the characters are selfish. X-Ray tells Stanley that if he finds anything to give it to him. But X-Ray is not the villain that role is played by the evil warden.
The conflict of the book is when Zero and Stanley run away. The adults guard all the water. The main problem to Zero and Stanley is they can?t go back to get water so, they press on into the desert. They find water on the big thumb, a mountain that looks like a thumb, but it is muddy. ?We heed the shovel so we can get the mud out without using your hand,? said Stanley. I think it would be hard to be Stanley or Zero because they had to drink muddy water that wouldn?t taste good.
The theme of the book is discipline and trust. Stanley has discipline when he is on the big thumb and he is not going crazy and doing stupid stuff. He also has trust by believing Zero will come back with food for him instead of just himself. Zero has discipline by staying under control when there are yellow spotted lizards on him. He also has trust by trusting Stanley on the big thumb. Stanley goes down and gets the shovel and doesn?t leave Zero on top of the bug thumb.
I have told you about the plot, characters, the conflict, and the theme. I think Holes by Louis Sachar is a good book and is a fifth grade level book. I would recommend this book to others because it has a great beginning, middle, and end that not all. Stanley gets to meet Clyde Livingston in person. Now you can read the book and do a book review.
