Carri writes the following about Hatchet :
In the beginning of Hatchet Brian (the main character) is on a one engine and one pilot plane. He was talking with the pilot when suddenly the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian crashes the plane and falls asleep for a couple of hours. He wakes up and makes a shelter to sleep in or to take cover from rain. A week later he makes a spear to catch fish, then later he makes fire from sparks off of the wall. He struck the wall with his hatchet. He would catch fish with the spear he made and fried the fish over the fire. Brian made a bow and arrow out of shoe laces and a stick. He would shoot ?foolbirds? and roast them over the fire, he learned how to skin and wash the birds so he wouldn?t get sick. Later there was a tornado and it washed the plane close to shore. After that, he went to the plane and struck it with the hatchet and made a hole to get into it. He struck it so hard, that it stung his hands and he lost his hatchet in the water, but he had made a hole big enough that he could get in the plane. When he got in the plane, he got the survival kit and brought it to shore. He was eating when a water plane landed in the lake and rescued him. He was on the island for 54 days, after that adventure, he could finally go home and see his family.
In Hatchet, I really liked how much of a struggle it showed to Brian. In most books there isn?t much of a hard life. I also like how many times it took Brian to get food, it really shows that it is hard to survive in the wilderness. I didn?t really like how Brian survived the crash with very little wounds, because in a plane crash it is hard to have very little wounds. Also, I didn?t like how the plane just all of a sudden came to the rescue. If a person is in a plane crash, people would come looking for them, but after 54 days a plane just comes. That is why I liked and disliked the book Hatchet
