Speak is a fiction/drama/teen angst book by Laurie Halse Anderson. Melinda Sordino is a freshman at Merryweather High school. She has no friends and is unable to speak. Her friends abandoned her when she really needed them. Melinda has shut herself out from the world. Her only solitude is an old janitor?s closet, where she hides when she can?t bear the dreadfulness of school life. Over the school year, she has transformed the closet to her special place where she goes every day after school. Only when she is confronted with the nightmare of her past, will the truth come out. Then she may be able to finally make herself speak. I love this book a lot. It shows what girls go through after a traumatic incident. When you are reading this book, you feel like you are a fly on the wall of Melinda?s life. You know all of her feelings and thoughts. The author did a very good job of hinting about what happens in the end without actually saying it until the end. The characters are very defined. They are their own entire person. Every character has a very distinct characteristic that other characters don?t. I give this book 9 out of 10.
