Sophia Raymond writes the following about A Banner Bold :
A Banner Bold’ is a well told story by Nadia Wheatley about the lead up to the Eureka Stockade and what it was like in that short twenty minute battle. Nadia has written around twenty amazing books. It explains what life was like for the diggers and children on the goldfields. It is about a young girl called Rosa Aarons traveling to the Ballarat Goldfields in the time of the gold rush in Victoria.

The book begins with Rosa on a ship travelling from England to Australia. It explains what the journey is like and how long long it would take back then. When she arrives in Ballarat, it shows how terrible it could be and how poor most families were. The main part of the story is the Eureka stockade and she is right there in the middle of it all.

Rosa loves theatre and is writing to her friend Jenny Chen back home in England. Katie Flanagan is Rosa’s best friend. At first they don't like each other but soon are hardly ever seen separate. Katie has carrot coloured hair.

Rosa is taught Latin and it shows some examples of Latin language as you read. I think it is a good book but could potentially be more interesting. I would recommend this book to younger children because it is simple and easy to understand.
