J. J. Richards writes the following about Pirates in Oz :
In which Ruggedo the Gnome King who has lost his speech for seven years (it's been five already) is wandering about in Ev and can't talk, for Peter hit him with a Silence Stone in THE GNOME KING OF OZ. He becomes a "dumb" King of Menanypoo where they can't talk, but words run across their forheads like electric OPEN signs you see in the windows. Soon Ruggedo gets his speech back while wandering in Kadj the Conjurer's Cave! He snoops in the "Sure Cure for Everything" cabinet and gets his speech back! He meets Clocker the Coo-Coo Clock Man who talks by slips of paper every 15 minutes. They meet horrible pirates that have mutniey from their captain for he would rather explore than plunder and such. Ruggedo gets help and teams up with the pirates to conquer Oz! Meanwhile, Peter from Philadelphia makes his THRID appearence in this book! He meets King Ato and Roger the Royal Read-Bird of Octogon Island. His subjects have swam away, for he is too soft on prisoners. They meet Captain Salt whose men and now working with Ruggedo. They board his ship THE CRESENT MOON and set sail on the Nonestic Ocean, meeting Breakfast the Bananny Goat whose ears are banannas, the Duke of Dork, and Pigasus the Winged Pig whose rider must talk in rhyme who joins them. They get frozen stiff, but can Pigasus, Peter, Captain Salt, Roger, and Ato make it to Oz in time to save Queen Ozma, the Magic Belt, and the whole kingdom? And Ato's desserted people have also teamed up with the pirates and Ruggedo the Ex-Gnome King! There is not much hope for Oz now. Unless THE CRESENT MOON can fly!

PIRATES IN OZ was published in 1931 by Reilly and Lee with 12 color plates and black-and-white illustrations. The story is good and in it Peter makes his third and last appearence. He says he and his Grandfather will return and teach Ozma and the Ozites how to play baseball, but I guess he never did. Someone should write a story about that! But Ruggedo the Gnome is transformed into an earthenware jug (whatever earthenware is) at the end. But years later in HANDY MANDY IN OZ, there may be a way to break the spell!

This book is a good story and I quite like how Ozma made Captain Salt the Royal Discoverer of Oz and he must conquer islands for her. Six books later, we'll hear from him in CAPTAIN SALT IN OZ!
