Jordan A. writes the following about Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule :
Born with a withered leg and hand, Pascal, who is about twelve years old, joins other former slaves in a search for a farm and the freedom that it promises.

This story is about three slaves trying to get to a place called Freedmen's Bureau. The three runaway slaves are called Pascal, Nelly and Gideon. They meet a lot of nice and mean people unexpectedly on their way to freedom.

Pascal, Nelly and Gideon find a farm and a school where Pascal and Nelly could attend. They learn about dignity, Freedmen's Bureau, the Union League and the Republicans. They also discovered it was not easy for former slaves to stay free and keep their land.
