My book was called Canyons, written by the world renowned Gary Paulsen. The book is written with two points of view. One from the eyes of a long since dead Apache Indian boy, and one from a present day teenager named Brennan. The view point changes every chapter or so.
This story is about an adolescent by the name of Brennan. While out camping with his mom, his mom’s boyfriend, and a youth group from a local church, he finds a skull with a strange bullet hole in the center of the forehead.
Brennan takes the skull home with him even though it is illegal, and soon becomes obsessed with it. But a strange voice in his head keeps convincing him to not tell anyone about the skull, and through a strange series of events, he becomes spiritually liked to Coyote Runs, the boy who used to have the skull in his head.
Soon, he starts to think that he will never be able to stay sane and keep his normal life until he returns the skull to its proper resting place.
After he sets out to return the skull, the FBI starts chasing him, and in a wild frenzy, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Brennan clash for the skull.
Will Brennan be able to return the skull after all? Or will the government get it first? But what if… what is this is all just a wild goose chase over nothing?
Canyons is a great book, and I would recommend it to all readers, young and old. It is a fantastic story packed with action, mystery, and logic. So please, if you ever get the chance, read this book.
