Devin Abernathy writes the following about Cirque Du Freak :

This is the second book of the terrifying Cirque Du Freak series, The Vampires Assistant. Darren Shan is forced to become the vampire, Mr. Crepsleys, assistant after turning into a half vampire. Darren Shan starts to experience the powers of a vampire. Darren starts to get lonely so Mr. Crepsley and him go and join the Cirque Du Freak thats when things get interesting. He makes friends with a snake boy and a kid named, Sam Crest, that lived near the camp site of the show. He also meets a environmental freak named Reggie Veggie and he releases a wolf man that kills Sam and ruins Darren's life.
