Gretchen P. writes the following about The Cay :
I gave this book a 10/10 because I feel that it is very well written. It really states what it would be like to be stranded somewhere without any way to get in touch with anyone. "The Cay" is somewhat like the book, "The Swiss Family Robinson". In that book a family is stranded on an island without anything. I really enjoyed this book and hope that you will too! After his boat is torpedoed by a German U-Boat, Phillip, a twelve year old American boy who lives on a Dutch island, is stranded on a raft with a black man named Timothy. Three days after being on the raft, Phillip becomes blind, because of strong smash on the head. Later, their raft floats up and onto a cay that is completely unreachable by anything larger than a raft. This is because it is surrounded by huge treacherous coral reefs. While staying on the island, Phillip learns to become more independent, and to learn ways to survive. He will need these skills when a huge hurricane whips through the cay, destroying it. Now Phillip is left panic striken and lonely.
