Deltora Quest Valley of the Lost is good for ages 11 and up as they will be interested because it brings adventure, danger, fear and a puzzle. You try and figure it out as you read the book. This is one of those books that you try and figure out before you finish it.
They start off creeping through the jungle in the night, attempting to find a way across the river. When they finally find the bridge that they are looking for, they gaze across to see sheep that are unusually inflating and changing. They realise that they are ols, creatures that can change size, shape and appearance.
They then start looking for another way around. They follow the river up stream to find if the river gets narrower, but instead they come across pirates (from the book before). They find the canoe the pirates rowed across to land on, so they take it and row it back to the pirate ship to find a friend they kidnapped.
They find themselves washed up down stream were the river turns to lake. They find themselves at the magical place called Tora guarded by magic and mystery. They enter Tora to find no one is living there anymore and read a clue on a stone tablet meaning the king was betray by his people. When they leave Tora they find some old accomplices on of the hill near them. They are told the stone they are looking for is in the valley of the lost and not to go there as many people never return. They end up leaving for the valley of the lost anyway, when they get there they meet a man who calls himself the guardian. The guardian tells them he likes games and if they want the gem they acquire they’ll have to play his game, a game filled with many riddles to find out the guardians real name. They have the time it takes for the candle they have to burn out. Leif knows that if the gem is taken out of greed or want it will bring them misfortune. They come to the last clue and they candle burning out life realises a mistake they made for the last riddle and says his name and gets it correct. The get to have the gem but they go to get it and it’s a fake the person before them got it and ran but slipped and a rock and died she took it for the wrong reason which brought misfortune. The next adventure brings them looking for the heir to the throne of deltora to beat the shadowlord.
