In The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo Baggins inherits the Ring of Power from his adopted uncle, Bilbo Baggins. The Ring belongs to the Dark Lord of Mordor. Frodo’s quest is to destroy the Ring; if he does this, the Dark Lord will be stopped from overtaking Middle Earth. In this first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Frodo finds many friends and meets interesting people and scary creatures. There are no illustrations, but Tolkien describes the characters and settings with lots of detail.
I rate this book a 9 because I felt the action in the beginning was a little slow, but it became more intense as the book progressed.
If you liked The Fellowship of the Ring, other good books in this genre include The Door Within series by Wayne Tomas Batson, the Inheritance cycle by Christopher Paolini, and for younger children Deltora Quest and Rowan of Rin, both series by Emily Rodda.
