Tangerine tells the story of Paul Fisher, 12, who is thrown into conflict when his family is forced to relocate from Texas to Tangerine,FLorida. Paul's main hardship is that his partial blindness prevents him from playing soccer in his new town which is his main goal. Complicating Paul's life is the fact of his older brother Erik. While Erik is a popular football player, he threatens everyone who is around him. Paul's situation in school is complex too; he likes Lake Windsor Downs well enough, but they won't let him play soccer. Paul has an opportunity to be heroic at Lake Windsor, but circumstances send him to yet another school where he's unknown.
What's good about Tangerine is Edward Bloor's ability to make the reader feel connected to this boy going through these hard times. The characters seem believable, and the story advances quickly. I would recommend this as a "boy read" unless you are a tomboy and soccer freak.
