The novel “Dragon Keeper” by Carole Wilkinson is based upon a slave girl named Ping who saves the life of a dragon who is being chased by a brutal dragon hunter. They take an epic journey across China carrying a stone that must be protected to Ocean. Ping is a courageous and adventurous girl. She feels she is not worthy of a name and her only friend is a rat Hua. But she finds the strength in her and helps Long Danzi, the ageing dragon.
I believe that Carole Wilkinson’s novel provides a lot of descriptive language such as “Throughout winter it was waist deep with snow and blasted by freezing winds,” which creates the atmosphere and fantastic images that represents what Ancient China would have looked like in the Han Dynasty. It makes you feel like you were actually witnessing the whole adventure.
The use of all language techniques including personification and similes are used appropriately for the fantasy genre. You can really feel all the emotions between the characters such as the tension and anger or happiness. The characters all have their very own exciting story to tell. They are really adventurous people who seem to always be finding new skills to take them on their long and tiring journey to Ocean. I found that this story not only reinforces the fantasy genre but also mixes a lot of information about Chinese history.
I really enjoyed reading Dragon Keeper because it is truly a fabulous and enchanting journey. This novel really delights you and leaves you yearning to know more. It has a very unexpected and satisfying climax that will leave you wrapped in the wonderful story. Carole Wilkinson is a very outstanding and creative author who describes everything so marvellously. She will leave you blown away by all her novel’s especially Dragon Keeper. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading fantasy, a little bit of history and likes to read just for a bit of imagination.
