Ready, set, hike! Come with me to explore the world of Crash written by Jerry Spinelli. Let me introduce the main characters. Crash is a tricky and sometimes mean middle school student. Penn Webb is a vegetarian, gentle Quaker who is brave and sometimes could be thought of as a nerd. Mike, is Crash’s mean, nosy, and stupid best friend.
In the beginning of the book, Crash has a new neighbor named Penn Webb. Penn isn’t allowed to do anything violent because he and his fmaily are Quakers! The relays are coming to their school, so Crash is going to enter for them. So is Penn, but Penn is trying out for cheerleading too! So when Crash came home from school the day before the tryouts, he asked his grandpa what he should do. His grandpa, Scooter, said, “Once you get close to the finish line, LEAN.” The person, who leans, breaks the rope and wins! Crash and Penn came head to head but then it’s Crash, then Penn, then Crash until Crash remembers about leaning, but then out LOUD, Crash screams at the top of his lungs, “LEAN!!!” Penn leans, but does Crash? You’ll have to go check this book out at your library if you want to see who wins!!!!!! (P.S. Also, does Crash stop being friends with Mike or Penn or both?)
JerrySpinelli has won a Newberry medal and has written over 15 books! Some other books that Jerry has written are Knots In My Yo-Yo String, Maniac Magee, Stargirl, and Wringer.
I loved the part when they had a prom and Crash went up to ask someone but instead he asked one but the girl who was wearin a big floppy white bow, and 2 little pigtailes and she said “No!” That was a shocker. I would give this book ten out of ten stars because it made me laugh so hard.
