samantha writes the following about Because of Winn-Dixie (Newbery Honor Book, 2001) :
Because Of Winn- Dixie
Do you believe in stray dogs running around in a grocery store? Well you will after reading Because Of Winn-Dixie written by Kate DiCamillo. In the beginning a ten year old girl named India Opal just moved and she misses all of her friends. Opal is also starting to miss her mama who left her when she was three. She lives with her father, the preacher. One day Opal’s father gave her a grocery list to get food from a store called Winn-Dixie. When she arrived she saw a stray dog running around the whole store. When that dog stopped, the manager yelled, “Somebody grab that dog!” Opal knew she had to do something so she said that the dog was hers. When Opal arrived at her home she asked if she could have the dog. It took the preacher a while to answer and then he said ok. Opal got to keep Winn-Dixie! After that Opal meets a lot of new friends because of Winn Dixie. She even has a barbeque, but that’s when the most horrible evnt happens. There is a thunderstorm and Winn-Dixie is deathly afraid of thunderstorms so they couldn’t find Winn-Dixie. Will they find Winn-Dixie or will Opal lose her best friend? Well go to the library and go find out.
The author Kate DiCamillo writes like a ten year old. She also writes The Tale of Despereaux and The Tiger Rising. I give Because of Winn-Dixie 5 out of 5 stars because it’s a great family book. I like this book because it makes everyone want to go home and hug their dog. You notice that dogs don’t stay alive as long as humans so enjoy them while you can. So go out to the library and check out Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
