James writes the following about Queen Zixi of IX or the Story of the Magic Cloak :
In which the fairies, under Queen Lulea, weave a beautiful magic cloak. It grants one wish to anybody, except for a person who steals it, and they give it to the first unhappy person they see. It ends up over the shoulders of the pretty Fluff of Noland, who, as well as her brother Bud, are orphans and looked after by their Aunt Rivette. But the King of Noland has died, and the forty-seventh person to enter the east gate of Nole, the capital is KING!! So, Bud becomes King and his sister Princess.

Fluff wishes to be very happy for the rest of her life and she is. Tellydeb wishes his dog, Ruffles, would talk, and it does! Tallydab wishes he can reach further than anyone else, and he does! Tillydib wishes the royal purse would remain ever filled, and it does! Tollydob wishes to be ten feet tall! Jikki the valet wishes he had six servants to help him with the royal duties. The funniest of all, perhaps, is how Aunt Rivette, wishes she could fly, and two wings sprout off her back! Queen Zixi, in the neighbouring Kingdom of Iz, hears about this magic cloak. Zixi is 683 years old and with witchcraft, deceives everyone into thinking she is really a beautiful sixteen year old. But she is unable to deceive a mirror! So she wants this cloak, that she may become beautiful to a mirror, so she wages war upon Noland, and steals it, before her army are pushed back. But the cloak will not grant any wish to a thief. Zixi, leaving it there, goes away. But in Noland, the awful Roly-Rouges from the clouds descend upon them and Aunt Rivette must rescue them and she takes them to Iz, where Zixi treats them very nicely. She promises to get their cloak, but once she goes back to where it was dropped, it had disappeared! Can she find it again?

QUEEN ZIXI OF IX, OR; THE STORY OF THE MAGIC CLOAK was first published in 1905. Baum had already written THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ and THE MARVELLOUS LAND OF OZ. He liked the short, two letter names, so after Oz and Mo, tried Ix. It is a funny story and Baum said to his oldest son, whom he dedicated it to: "So far this is my greatest acheivement."

There are many funny parts, when Ruffles reminds his master that "this is real life in the Kingdom of Noland" and Bud's scornful expression when the maid of Zixi wishes for candy, saying "Fudge!" Bud, Fluff and Zixi all appear in THE ROAD TO OZ, Baum's fifth Oz book, just for a brief time, for Ozma's birthday. In THE MAGIC OF OZ, Kiki Aru, as a bird, flies over Noland and Ix. Skampavia, ruled by Skamperoo from THE WISHING HORSE IN OZ, is bordered by Ix, Skamperoo not wishing to conquer it "because Zixi is too pretty." Chillywalla and his box-shaped Boxres all live in the Ixian forest from THE SILVER PRINCESS IN OZ. (In Thompson's Oz books Zixi is written as Zixie.)

Anyway, this book is a great story
