One day in June, Mary Lou's cousin Carl Ray arrives at the Finney's house. Mary Lou gets extremely annoyed from Carl Ray being so quiet and how he doesn't make his bed. Mr.Furtz dies from a major heart attack. Alex Cheevey is an amazingly cute guy. Mary Lou and Alex start going out and eventually become boyfriend and girlfriend. Mary Lou is forced to go West Virginia and she misses Alex very much. In West Virginia, Mary Lou learns to be unselfish.
When they get back, Mary Lou Found out from Carl Ray that Mr.Furtz was his real father. When Carl Ray comes back from Beth Ann's house, he gets into a car accident and was unconscious for a week or two. Uncle Carl Joe and Aunt Radene come from West Virginia. When Carl Ray woke up, he was so happy to see his family and Mary Lou is happy for him, too.
