Akihito Ishikawa writes the following about The Pearl :
Kino and his family are poor, but one day Kino finds a huge pearl. Their life would never be the same. The pearl was creating greed and evil that surrounded Kino and his family. Kino loses his house in a fire because someone wants the pearl. His family is fleeing from town to sell but trackers pursue them, and Kino and his family is tracked down.
There is a conflict in this novel. It is a struggle that Kino has with himself. It is important to read the conflict because it shows weakness of humanfs mind. After Kino found the pearl, he realized that the pearl was generally causing eviler changes in his life and the lives of many others, but he couldnft give up the pearl because he wanted education for his son. In the end, this decision leads to tragic ending.
In my opinion this book is a good book of tragedy and sorrow. I have read another Steinbeckfs work, The Grapes of Wrath, and I think his work always touches the core of human existence. This story teaches us that no matter how priceless a pearl, a lot of money, it doesnft mean it will bring happiness to our lives. Money is not everything.
