If you like books that are humorous, have minor suspense, and varieties of social issues, you should read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. This book is amazing because of all the beautiful language Philbrick uses and the suspense that is in almost every chapter. Freak the Mighty is an exciting page turner with a devastating end that makes you wonder what Philbrick is up to next.
In this book, larger-than-average Max befriends smaller-than-average Freak (Kevin) while they experience wild obstacles. These opposites attract as Max and Freak go on a wild adventure we call life. Max’s father (Killer Kane) just got out of jail for killing his wife (Max’s mother) and is after Max. Killer Kane is trying to prove to his son that he is innocent. Is he a killer or an innocent, normal person? You will find Max struggling with the fact that his dad is out of jail and Freak juggling school, friends, an upcoming surgery, and his disability. Will Max and Freak crumble under pressure? Will they meet more problems that don’t help the situation at all? I give this book a 10/10 stars for its devastating end, brilliant language, and the suspense building in every chapter.
