Amber B. Carter writes the following about Because of Winn-Dixie :
The book was about a dog named Winn-Dixie and its owner. In the story Opal Juut moved to Naomi from Watley. She was sad because she left her other friends behind. She was in the grocery store getting some groceries. There were people in the store screaming, running, and shouting because there was a dog in the store and dogs aren't allowed in the store. They were going to call the pound, but she didn't want the dog to go to the pound. So she said it was her dog.

Opal named the dog Winn-Dixie like the store she found him in. She didn't have a mother just a father. He was the preacher at Open Arms Baptist Church of Naomi. During the summer, Opal makes friends with various people and even gets a job.

I liked the book. It was a very good book. I would recommend this book for the whole class to read out loud like we did for The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. The reason being it teaches a lesson. At some point of a person's life they feel alone and lonely. This book shows if you try to make friends you can. The theme is that making friends is an important part of life and you can do anything if you try.
