A Long Way from Chicago, by Richard Peck, is the perfect comedy for a child aproxamately ten to fourteen. I would give it a five-star rating, because it captures the image of the great depresion perfectly, yet, with humor on every page! In my opinion, reading this book was a very good pass time.
This story is about two children, Joey and Mary Allice, who spend time with their grandma every year. Grandma tends to be a bit of a trickster. For instance, a man named Shot-gun Cheathan was killed and Grandma said he was a war hero and a friend, so his last night above ground was spent at her house with a nosey journalist and her worst enemy, Effie Wilcoks! To solve this problem, she put a cat on Shot-guns chest. Since a cat tends to grab at things, gause was hanging over the body, and Grandma is completely rechless, she prettended Shot-gun came to life and got out her shot gun firing wildly at windows, sending both of her geusts away.Grandma is also a dare-devil. For instance, Grandma was boating, on private property, with the sheriff's boat, with an illegal fish trap, baited with cheese, right by the sheriff's patio, to find everyone drunk and in their underbritches, singing folk songs out of key! Grandma is always up to somthing.
You should really read this book. It is very satisfying. You never know what Grandma will do next! Go on! Read the book! You'll love it!
