Maddy Vosel writes the following about Out of the Dust (Newbery Medal Book) :
I read an astound book called Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. This is an older time book that is historical fiction. Out of the Giant would be a great book for teens who like reading emotional novels.

During Out of the Dust a girl named Billie Jo is trying to survive her dusty habitat. An accident in the family causes a scar in Billie Jo's life. Billie Jo's dad doesn't talk to her about the problem so she is basicly on her own. During this situation dust storms ruin the family farm. All billie Jo wants to do is escape the dust and find a peaceful home.

I would rate this book a four out of five. The reason I chose a four was because it was a little to much wording for such a small part in the book that wasn't important. If I could change the ending then I would of had Billie Jo and her dad move in with Louise so they could have a mother to help their family. Over all this book was overwhelming to see what would happen next and made me realize how hard it was to survive a long time ago. If you are interested in this book than go check it out at the library.
