This is a pretty slow book. It tells the story of how the St. Louis manager (Tont LaRussa). He is a laid back manager who knows a lot about the game but does not like it when the players goof off or do not play the game smart. This book is a good book if you are looking how the MLB teams work and the amount of scouting they do before a single game. They spend aboout 3 hours on each hitter they face and pitcher of their techniques and ways. It also is a good book for baseball fanatics and others fans of the game about the inner working and gives a view of what it is like to be a baseball manager.
First in the book it talks about the previous series and how that went. Secondly it talks about the upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs. They talk about all the preparation and other things they have to do before going up to Chiago to play them. Then they have all o their prep talks and how their stategy for the game. Then they play their first game. Then they have their prep for the next game. Then the day of the game one of the Cardinal players diees (Darren Kile) and they cancel that game. Then they are sad but do prep for the third game and play it and win.
My favorite part is when they talk about all of the preparation that go into each game. I thought it was pretty impressive of how they did that. That was definatley my favorite part.
My two favorite quotes are:
1. I'm as nauseous as I've ever been. I have a terrible headache. My head is pounding. I feel like throwing up and I'm having trouble swallowing. And the beauty if it is, you want to feel like this every day.
Tony La Russa (thoughts before a big game)
2. Tony La Russa is one of the best minds in baseball. The book proves that baseball is so much more than statistics.
