Before I read this book I already knew about world war two. Although factually, meaning i know the dates of allied victories, I know what D-day is. But I never knew about the war personally. Reading this book gave me a first hand account on what life was actually like. The living conditions, rations, and concentration camps. Riva's character is a heroine, yet also a real person. She gets scared, she feels as if all is lost. But in the end she pulls through. To me that is what a hero should really be.
