Jeremy writes the following about Sugar in the Raw: Voices of Young Black Girls in America :
Sugar in the Raw: Voices of Young Black Girls in America by Rebecca Carroll is a very descent and interesting book that was made for young black females. Sugar in the Raw is a book about the different lives of fifteen black girls that Rebecca Carroll interviewed throughout the nation from Brooklyn, Seattle, Alabama and Vermont. The girls vary in ages from eleven to eighteen. The book gives a brief description of each girl’s lives and how they feel they are treated and the type of community they live in. The book goes over numerous topics such as their self-esteem, the way they are treated, their personal values, and their own perceptions of race in society. I rated this book a seven because I believed that the girls should have had more to say. The story should have been lengthier and the girls should have had more than just one chapter to say what they had to say. I felt this way because at the end of the chapter’s the girls always leave you with a cliff hanger and I wanted to know more about what the girls went through in life and how they are coping with it. This story relates to the movie Freedom Writer's because it deals with stories of numerous people. Freedom Writer's shows the viewers the struggles of different students who all come together to form one life story. This is exactly what Sugar in the Raw does, because all fifteen girls come together to form this story with the help of Rebecca Carroll. I would reccommend this story to read, because it is short and is a very quick read. It always has the reader's attention and it is also a good thing to see how other people are going through the same thing that you are going through in life. All young black females in America should read this story because I feel that all of them would be able to relate.
