This is one of my favorite books. I enjoyed reading this book! I enjoyed this book a lot because it was fast paced and very suspenseful for me. I finished it in no time! Runner is a book written by Carl Deuker. Runner is about a young man named Chance. Chance has had a terrible childhood with his parents. His parents got divorced while he was young, and he moved with his mom and stayed with his dad (the alcoholic) on weekends. Unfortunately for him, one weekend his mom never came back for him. He has been forced to live on a tiny boat with his dad called the Tiny Dancer. He never really enjoyed it. Just as Chance thought things could not get worse for him, his dad was fired from his job. Chance was working at a local restaurant called Ray’s on the weekends, but he was not making enough money to pay all the bills and to help support his father’s drinking habit. Word gets out about Chance’s family situation and “the fat guy” came to him offering a job. Chance is to keep running his daily routine along the beach, but his job is to carry a backpack with him while he runs. He is to look along the rocks on the beach to find a package to bring back to his locker. Things are working out for Chance and now he gets to work on his personal life with his close friend Melissa. Suspicion begins to go around about what chance is doing. Chance finds his self in a situation that he needs to get out but he does not know how he is going to do it. I rated this book a 10, because I found it quite interesting how he struggled to live his life from day to day and how he depended on no one. Although the story was great, it would have been even more interesting if it were told from the father’s point of view as well so you can learn about how he was coping with the struggle of his alcohol addiction and not having a job. I would recommend everyone to read this book because it gives you a little bit of understanding how everyone does not have everything, and it teaches you about the struggle of others. If you read the book Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen you would enjoy reading this book as well. I related these books to one another because they both are quick reads and were interesting and nicely written.
