Matthew writes the following about Out of the Dust (Newbery Medal Book) :
Out of the Dust is a book of a girl named Billy Jo who's Ma and little brother died in childbirth. The book is based on 2 years (1934-1935). her and her Pa live with each other. Niether of them talk much at all after the 2 of them (ma & brother)die. They all live during the Dust bowl. Billy Jo is sick of all the dust. She hops on a train and heads out to Arizona. As she is riding, a man gets on board. While Billy Jo is sleeping, the man takes her stale (but still good) buscuits. But, in exchange for the buscuits, the man leaves a picture of his wife and boys. When she gets as far as Flagstaff, Arizona, she comes home. His daddy starts going to night school. He starts going out with his teacher. At the end of the book he engages Louise (his teacher).
This book was very well written. It describes feelings and emotion. It does have some weak spots.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been through a lot in their life. I know, i've been through a lot in my life too.
