zztop writes the following about Out of the Dust (Newbery Medal Book) :
Out of the Dust by Karren Hesse is realy a wonderful book that's in poem form. This book is about a girl named Billie Jo(which is quite a wierd name for a girl) who in a time called the 'Dust Bowl'.She is a normal girl who excelent at piano but can't play since her hands were burnt. Her mother was also burnt (very badly). She had no face.In the book her mother and brother died so at the end it's just
Billie Jo,Bayard(Pa),and Bayard's girlfriend,Loise.
There was only one weakness in the book that I saw,you don't know squat about Ma or Franklin. The strengths in this book is everything else. From the wonderful description of being born on the floor to
Billie Jo,Loise, and Pa finding a way to come together as a family in the last poem "Finding a Way."The characters were described perfectl-y,I felt like I realy knew the characters, except Ma and Franklin.I do think it should have said more about FDR.
I would recommend this poem to people who have been throgh alot, that or if your a history freak. This book has alot of history so...yes I would definatly recommend this book!
