Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is a story about a girl named Billy Jo. She lives in Oklahoma 1934 - 1935 which was in the Dust Bowl. She feels guilty when her mom and baby brother, Franklin, died. Now she lives with her father and they don't talk much. Billy Jo runs away because life is getting difficult. She comes home when she reliazes life isn't always how you want it to be. Billy Jo starts to talk to her father and now he has a fiance' named Loise.
Out of the Dust told a lot about Billy Jo and her pa. But it didn't tell me enough about Billy Jo's ma. Also, Franklin didn't have enough details. it just told me that his name was Franklin. This book had excellent details. It really gave me some good imagery or pictures in my head. It didn't surprise me every time I looked at Billly Jo's picture. Karen Hesse told me a lot about what Billy Jo looked like. The message in this book was excellent.
( sometimes life isn't always what you want it to be. )
I would recommend this book to others. If you would like to learn about the Dust Bowl, then this is an excellent book for you to read. If you like historical fiction, I would definitely check this book out.
