Elise writes the following about Out of the Dust (Newbery Medal Book) :
Out of the Dust is a fantastic book to read.In this book there is a girl named,Billie Jo.She has a father and a pregnant mother in the book. The setting in this story is in the Panhandle which is Oklahoma. The time in this book was during the Dust Bowl around 1934-1935.Their was absolutly a lot of accidents and main events in this story like when Billie Jo's father was getting a pail of kerosene and put it near the oven where Billie Jo's mom was cooking breakfast. Her mother thought it was water so she poured it on the stove and a rope of fire came out!Billie Jo and her mother got burned bad.During that time Billie Jo had to get her skin cut off of her handsbut her mother was much worst. Her mother died giving birth to Billie Jo's brother,Franklin who also died a little while after her mother died. After all of that destruction Billie thinks it's her fault and her father barely talks to her.Billie Jo was taught a lesson to never feel guilty or bad if someone you loved very much pasted away.Billie Jo also loved playing the piano. The strenghts in this book are that the author did a lot of description like the charaters and the setting in the book. The most weakness event in this book was when her mother and brother died!I reccomend this book to all the readers because it tells you that when life gets hard you can still feel happy and have a great time. Also I think this book is the most surprising and descriptive book ever and I really enjoyed reading it!!!
