Maddie writes the following about The Tiger Rising :
The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo Student Reviewer: Maddie The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo is her second novel, which is a fiction story. The story takes place in Florida at an old, run down hotel called the “Kentucky Star.’’ The main character’s name is Rob Horton. This twelve year-old doesn’t share how he really feels – to anyone, even his father. When Rob packed away his clothes to move from Jacksonville to Lister, Florida, he also packed away his sadness, happiness and heartache. Rob’s mother had just died. Rob needs to lighten his heart. Rob has had itchy, red blisters all over his legs for six months. The principal at the new school said Rob should put medicine on his legs and stay home for a couple days. But Willy May, who works at Kentucky Star, tells Rob he has blisters because he’s keeping all his thoughts inside him. One tries to heal from the outside, and the other from the inside. Rob finds a beautiful tiger at an abandoned gas station that he discovers belongs to Beauchamp, the hotel owner who doesn’t take care of him. Like the tiger, Rob needs to meet someone who will set his thoughts free, much like the tiger wants his freedom. Who does Rob meet? Will Rob decide to let his thoughts go? What will happen to the tiger? What will happen to the relationship with him and his father? Find out in The Tiger Rising. What is interesting about the author’s writing in all her books is that she can write in all different styles but still make it interesting. I liked this book because I could feel the characters emotions. Readers who like to “jump into the story’’ with the characters and understand how they feel, will enjoy this book. I’d rate this book a 9 out of 10 because it was a great story, even though it was sad.
