The Sign Of the Beaver, concerns a boy named Matt, who patiently awaits the return of his father, while trying to survive alone, in a cabin in the wilderness of Maine. He encounters some problems such as an attack of swarming bees. Matt is rescued by an Indian Chief, and his grandson, Attean. Both Attean and Matt share each others customs and beliefs. They have many adventures together. Matt teaches Attean to speak English. In return, Matt learns to become a skilled hunter. Matt must make a decision to wait for his family to return, or join the beaver tribe as they move north.
This is an excellent book. I can usually tell right away if a book will be boring, but the author immediately captured my full attention.
Both Boys and girls alike would enjoy this Newberry Honor Book. I believe that this book could be enjoyed by a 5th to 9th grader. Adventures are plentiful, and I actually learned what Indian life was like.
