Necia Weimer writes the following about Runner :

The book Runner, by Carl Deuker was one of the best books I have ever read. I am very picky about the books I do read, and this book was perfect. I likes how it was so realistic even though it was a fictional book.I enjoyed how the ending was not just a fairy tale ending, it was very real and very sad. However, I did not like how the main character, Chance was so shy, he didn't seem to even want to make friends, as though he had given up. He also never wanted to take a risk, which was most likely because he didn't have much of anything, and taking a risk could result in him losing the few things he actually had.
