"Ella Enchanted", by Gail Carson Levine is a wonderful young adult novel. Ella, the young girl and main character from the novel, is truely a character that many people can relate to.
I've see the new movie with the wonderful actress, Anne Hathaway, and it was an good movie (although some things like the cleavage issues show otherwise)... that is if you hadn't read the book first.
The movie does not give the book (or Gail Carson Levine), the credit they deserve. I was enraged when I saw how the movie twisted the book! Many of the things that happened to Ella made her into the witty, determined, strong-willed heroine she was. For example, in the movie Ella's father was portrayed as loving. According to the book, he most certainly was not! If he had been a loving father, Ella's charater would have turned out differently. Also Char's personality and character would have turned out differently if he had an evil uncle (as in the movie) and not a basic loving family. These small things should not be left out of the story because they make the charater. And while there were many other things that the movie left out or add, that I dislike, those two issues were on top.
If you love or disliked the movie, you should read the book. "Ella Enchanted", is a fantasticly fresh view of the whole "Cinderella" story line. "Ella Enchanted,"(the book, unlike the movie) is not so "corny" as to loose the interest of older readers and is "make-believe" enough to hold the attention of children. Overall, this is a wonderous book and I highly recommend it to all who love fairy tales.
