I had to read this book because I was given an assignment to present the three 1998 Newbery Honor books. "Ella Enchanted" was one of these, with good reason. There were times when I was wondering why it didn't win THE award. When I first glanced at the cover, I had it in my head that this was to be a story set in a modern city where Ella goes to school and lives like other children her age, so it took me some time to get used to the fact that it was indeed set in a far away land inhabited by dwarves, elves and even ogres. I was captivated by Ella's character as well as by the relationship between Ella and Char, the prince. The correspondance between the two was the one thing that really kept me reading, and of course because the tale is based on Cinderella, I knew they would end up together but what I really wanted to know was how. Ella's ability to master languages was another intriguing thing about her, as well as her thoughts that no one else can hear as she struggles to break the curse laid upon her at birth. This story expands upon the original version of "Cinderella" in a way that captures the imagination. While there where no illustrations, I could see the land and people being described quite effortlessly. A must-read!
