Riley R. writes the following about A Child Called 'It' :
A Child Called It
By Dave Pelzer

I recently read the book A Child Called It, written by the victim himself, Dave Pelzer. This true novel is honestly one of the best that I have ever read. Pelzer’s way of re-telling the tragedies of his childhood, really makes you feel as if you were experiencing Dave went through as a child. A Child Called It is about the past of Dave Pelzer, and how his alcoholic mother would abuse him excessively.
One reason I enjoyed this book was because the plot is very dramatic and unpredictable. Almost every page tells you something new and exciting. For example, Dave’s mother would beat him one day, but the next day she would say sorry, and become a sweet, loving parent. But you never knew if she had a plan or if she had really changed to the perfect mom. “For reasons I didn’t understand, mother had decided to have me sleep in the master bedroom, whether Father was home or not. She slept in the upstairs bedroom with brothers. I didn’t really care as long as I didn’t have to sleep on the army cot in the cold garage. ” pg.119-120.
The characters in this story are so well described that you almost feel as if you have known them forever! You can connect to at least one thing with every character. For example, the mother is very confused and emotionally un-stable, the father tries his best to turn things around but eventually gives in, the brothers feel very bad but the soon are brainwashed into what their mother has been acting as, and Dave Pelzer has faith no matter how drastic something could be, and he wont give up, especially by letting his mother take away his life. “I held in my tears, refusing to cry because I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of my defeat.” pg. 132.
The writing style of Dave Pelzer is very vivid and detailed. His stories are simple to read, but yet very powerful. A Child Called It is full of great words and the writing is organized well. “Mother’s wrath was much worse for me. I always shook my head, timidly saying what she wanted to hear”. Pg. 134.
Overall, A Child Called It is a fabulous book that I recommend to anyone ages ten and older. Just reading the story makes you want to make a difference. After I read the book, I decided that when I grow up, I would like to be a social worker…to help other children who are being treated as poorly as Dave was in his past!
